5 stopsThe five temples where Shiva is worshipped as the five elements of creation

In the Shaiva vision of the cosmos, everything that exists is woven from five elements — earth, water, fire, air, and space. At five great temples of the South, Shiva is enshrined as each element in turn: as the Prithvi Lingam of earth at Kanchipuram, rising from water at Thiruvanaikaval, blazing as the beacon of Arunachala at Thiruvannamalai, breathing as the wind-stirred flame of Srikalahasti, and finally dissolving into pure space at Chidambaram, where the sanctum's famous secret is that there is nothing to see at all. Walked in sequence, the circuit becomes a meditation: the devotee moves from the most tangible form of the divine to the most formless. The five temples span the Kaveri delta, the northern Tamil plains, and the hills of southern Andhra — a journey of roughly a week by road, and one of the oldest themed pilgrimages in India.
