Kerala's temples speak a language all their own: circular and square sanctums crowned with steep copper-clad roofs, timber theatre-halls, lamp-lined courtyards, and murals painted in mineral colours. This circuit gathers five of the state's most revered shrines. Chottanikkara honours the Mother Goddess, adorned as Saraswati, Lakshmi and Durga across a single day. Vaikom and Ettumanoor are ancient temples of Shiva, joined with Kaduthuruthy in the Vaikathashtami tradition; Ettumanoor is famed for its classical murals and its seven-and-a-half golden elephants. Ambalappuzha, raised by the Chembakassery rajas, is beloved for its child-Krishna and its milk-payasam. And high in the forested Western Ghats stands Sabarimala, the hill shrine of Ayyappa, drawing one of the largest annual pilgrimages on earth.
