Kakatiya Temples

From Warangal, the Kakatiya dynasty ruled much of the Telugu country between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries and left behind temples of a distinctive genius — star-shaped platforms, black basalt polished like metal, and pillars turned as if on a lathe. This circuit joins two of the finest: the three-shrined Thousand Pillar Temple of 1163 at Hanamkonda, and the Rudreshwara temple of 1213 at Palampet, named for its sculptor Ramappa and inscribed by UNESCO in 2021. Set in the countryside around Warangal, they trace the confident arc of Kakatiya art within an easy day of one another.
