Near the Kaveri by Tiruchirapalli, the Goddess is worshipped as Samayapuram Mariamman — the mother sought for health and for the fulfilment of vows, one of the most visited Amman temples in the Tamil country.
History
Samayapuram stands a little north of Tiruchirapalli, near the Kaveri. Here the Goddess is worshipped as Mariamman, the folk mother associated with health, rain, and the curing of disease. Grown from the Vijayanagara and Nayak period, it is among the wealthiest and most visited temples in Tamil Nadu, drawing crowds for its vows and healing.
Architecture
The temple is built in the Dravidian manner around the shrine of the Goddess, who is worshipped in a form of raw power rather than gentle grace. Its precincts fill with devotees fulfilling vows, and its festival processions are among the largest in the region.
Legends
Mariamman is the mother of the village and the fields, sought especially against the pox and fevers, and Samayapuram's Goddess is held to be swift to answer such prayers. Devotees make offerings of many kinds — rolling around the shrine, carrying fire-pots, shaving the head — in fulfilment of vows made in distress.
Festivals
The Chithirai Thiruvizha is the great festival, when the Goddess is drawn in procession and vast crowds come from across the Tamil country. Fridays and the Tamil month of Aadi are especially thronged.

Samayapuram is a temple of the vow and its fulfilment — a place of intense, direct devotion, where the mother is petitioned in trouble and thanked in relief, amid some of the largest crowds of the Kaveri country.
