History
Annavaram crowns the Ratnagiri hill by the Pampa river in the Godavari country of Andhra Pradesh. Here Vishnu is worshipped as Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana, the lord of truth, with his consort Anantalakshmi; it is among the most visited temples of coastal Andhra, sought above all by families keeping the Satyanarayana Vratam.
Architecture
The temple stands atop the hill in the Dravidian manner, its main shrine laid out as a cosmic diagram — a two-tiered structure with the presiding deity above and the Yantra of worship below, echoing the form of a great mandala. The hill is reached by road and by steps, with the Pampa winding below.
Legends
Satyanarayana is the form of Vishnu whose story is read at the Vratam — the vow by which a family, rich or poor, honours the lord of truth with a simple offering and the reading of his tale. The temple is held to grant the fruit of this vow, and pilgrims come to perform it before the god himself.
Festivals
Every day sees families performing the Satyanarayana Vratam, and full-moon days and Kalyanotsavam draw the greatest crowds. The god's own wedding festival and the Prabhala and hill festivals fill the year.
